Over years of testing it showed an average grain Fe concentration of 45 ppm and zinc 32 ppm compared to the baseline of 30 ppm Fe and 20 ppm Zn in sorghum. Its protein content is high but phytates content is low making the nutrient more bioavailable. Based on its extensive testing in farmers’ fields in Maharashtra by the Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth (VNMKV) -Parbhani for last three years and superiority for grain and fodder yields over the best controls it was released as Parbhani Shakti for cultivation by farmers in Maharashtra. This is the first biofortified sorghum variety (ICSR 14001) released in India. Besides, ICSR 14001 is an excellent male parent for hybrids development and we developed more than 300 hybrids using it which are under testing.
